Lobster Fest

On Saturday, September 3, Niwot said farewell to summer in its traditional style–festive and focused, with an eye towards helping others.

Lobster Fest was better than ever–the lobster (flown in from Maine) sweeter, the butter richer, the music delightful, and every detail carefully orchestrated from the kids' favors to the sand-filled Mason jar centerpieces.

Tim Stiles & The House Blend Band entertained guests and volunteers alike with songs by Steely Dan, John Denver, David Gray and Chicago. Attendees were on their feet dancing near the bandstand and while visiting the Silent Auction tent set up towards the back of Whistle Stop Park.

While last year's attendees braved torrential rain, this year the sun was shining brightly as people waited in line for their delicious crustaceans.

Each adult received a lobster with fresh corn, red potatoes and baked beans. Fresh-baked rolls and plenty of butter (both melted and icy pats) made sure each bite was absolute perfection, and ice cream and adorable lobster cookies by Joan's Sweet Treats made a memorable ending to the meal.

Kids' tickets entitled the holder to the coveted lobster mac & cheese, although quite a few parents could be caught dipping rolls in the remnants after children ran off to play at the park.

While the event sold out the evening before, Deborah Fowler, Niwot Business Association Vice-President, said in retrospect, "We had record ticket sales and could have easily sold another 50 tickets or so due to demand. Make sure to buy your tickets early next year!"

All proceeds went to the Marshall Fire Survivors, and Lobster Fest brought in another $2,500 towards the overall goal of $100,000. At present, the Marshall Fire fund has raised over $90,000, with the end goal expected to be reached by the grand finale event Oct 5 at the 1914 House. That event will feature an online auction where high-end holiday experiences, such as chef-catered dinners, will be available to the highest bidders.

Attendance was evenly split between out-of-towners and Niwotians who celebrated their Labor Day weekend at the storied event.
