All Local, All The Time
The good times keep on rolling for Niwot High School boys soccer.
Continuing a streak of dominance spanning the last five weeks, Niwot boys soccer came up with its ninth and tenth straight victories to secure their second Longs Peak League 3A/4A title in three years.
Niwot's final week of regular season play started with a Tuesday night road trip to Roosevelt High School in Johnstown (3-11-1 / 1-7-1), where the Cougars comfortably dispatched the Roughriders, 5-0.
Niwot Head Coach Stephen Dimit was thrilled with the result and how the team adapted to field conditions quite different from the Cougars' home turf. "Roosevelt is always a tough road trip for us," said Dimit. "It's a grass field tucked into wheat and corn fields, and it picks up a little wind. The field feels different, but the guys handled it and played well."
As has been Niwot's custom during the 10-game win streak, the victory was a collaborative effort, as five different players netted goals and four provided assists. "Christian Perez and Josh Rodriquez got us started," Dimit said, "and we kept spreading the ball around. Each goal was scored by a different player."
While the game against Roosevelt was a bit of a breeze, the regular season finale was anything but a cakewalk. With a playoff berth on the line, the Riverdale Ridge High School Ravens (8-7 / 7-2) came out hungry, playing for a win. While the Ravens were able to net a goal against Niwot, Jett Feiner and Javier Alvira each scored goals sealing the Cougars' undefeated league title.
"It was a really tight game," Dimit said, "and it had a playoff feel. It got gritty and physical, and I'm so proud of our team for winning that style of game."
With the wins last week, Niwot finished the season with a 12-3 overall record, including a perfect 9-0 in league play. One vital key to the Cougars' success this season has been goalkeeping.
"(Matthew) Hanson and (Javier) Amaya have done an outstanding job this fall," said Dimit. The pair nearly had a full-season shutout, allowing zero goals in league play until the final minute of the finale against the Ravens. Over the nine-game league season, the Cougars outscored their opponents by a whopping 38-1 margin.
Although the regular season is over, the Cougars are far from finished this fall. Next on tap for the sixth-ranked Cougars? Their sterling record has earned them a home game Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. against the D'Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School Jaguars (9-5-1 / 5-2-1) to kick off the 2022 CHSAA 4A Boys Soccer State Championships.
With a win, Niwot would host one more game at NHS, date and time TBD.
