All Local, All The Time

View November art at The Old Oak Coffeehouse and Winot Coffee Company

November has brought new art to Winot Coffee Company in Cottonwood Square and The Old Oak Coffeehouse on 2nd Avenue.

Winot Coffee Company is featuring art from Jacque Michelle, a local artist and art educator who specializes in colorful, expressive acrylic-based work. Her pieces typically depict lush landscapes and bright, floral arrangements, and she teaches her technique to others from her Boulder studio.

She also takes students on trips to Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico, and this exhibit features paintings made on one of these trips. An explanation of this trip is posted next to three of the featured artworks.

Michelle's exhibit highlights between 18 and 24 examples of work from six painters and she deeply appreciates the chance to expose the community to this art. "I love that we have a showcase for this work and appreciate that the shop is hosting us there. I've painted for more than 20 years and love when work is at the Coffeehouse. As painters, we've gotten to know each other on the trip, and now we get to show our work together. I couldn't be more thrilled."

Work at the exhibit will be for sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to the artists.

The exhibit at Winot Coffee in November, as well as during the other months, is curated by Laurie Algar, another member of the area arts community, who shared how much she enjoys pulling these art exhibits together. She said, "I love that I get to visit various festivals and art shows, always looking for new artists. There is so much talent in this community and in the general region, and Winot is very supportive of artists, so it's a win-win situation!"

Algar also appreciates that her own work is featured at the store, across from the main entryway to the shop, and near the cooler. Her displays include lamps, mosaics, and custom greeting cards. They can also be found online as part of Alger's business, Fantasia Mosaics.

Across town, the Old Oak Coffeehouse is showing landscape artist Jonathan Machen, an area visual artist who works in pen and ink, and acrylic and oils. He is the brother of the shop's co-owner, Patty Machen, and although he grew up in Northern New Mexico, he currently lives in Boulder and works out of the Eldorado Springs Art Center.

Machen's work draws source material from places he has lived as well as where he's traveled including Egypt, Vietnam, Australia, Alaska, Hawaii and Japan. "I am very excited, it is my second time showing work there and I'm hoping to plaster the place with color and line and design."

He said that he is showing pastel drawings and prints of his work in pen and ink. He deliberately chose not to show any of his work in heavier frames that could cause damage to the walls of the shop.

All of Machen's work exhibited at The Old Oak is for sale. Those interested can also view his work on his website at jonathanmachen.com.
