All Local, All The Time
The Niwot High School girls swim and dive team entered winter break on a high note by topping the Class 4A field at the REX Memorial Coaches Invite on Dec. 17.
Niwot placed 12th overall, but the team's 244 points were the most amongst the 13 Class 4A schools competing, which included local foes Longmont High School and Silver Creek High School. Jamieson Legh was once again the Cougars' standout as the senior took second in the 100 butterfly (55.87 seconds) and third in the 50 freestyle (23.99) at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.
Sophomore Elizabeth Fay scored 384.55 in the 1-meter dive to place 12th and the Cougars also had a pair of relay teams finish within the top 10 - Legh, Stephanie Mow, Rowan Lavigne and Charlotte Heuer placed eighth in the 200 medley and sixth in the 200 freestyle.
Three days prior, the Cougars bested Roosevelt High School in a dual meet at Mountain View High School on Dec. 14, 133-49. Niwot managed to win all 12 events with Legh, Lavigne and Heuer each winning a pair of individual races.
Lila Repsher swam a 1:13.47 to win the 100 backstroke, Shefali Joshi's endurance gave her a comfortable first-place finish in the 500 free (6:05.60) and Fay beat out eight other Roughriders in the 1-meter diving.
In the 200 medley and 200 free relay events, Niwot won with Legh, Heuer, Lavigne and Devi Burnett. Emmy Hostelley, Juliana Strope, Evelyn Hess and Hannah Hess also secured a victory in the 400 free relay.
First-year head coach Ella Thramann's Cougars now have some considerable momentum - at least from a results perspective - heading into the second portion of their season.
Niwot resumes competition on Jan. 7 at the Mountain Vista Invitational.
