All Local, All The Time
This winter the many strains of respiratory viruses are lingering and reoccurring. If you have kids
in school they will pick them up and share them with you. Staying healthy is challenging right
now but when the going gets tough, you can get well and stay well.
I am a local acupuncturist and I love to teach my patients that they have the power to maintain
their health. You know your body better than anyone else. If you pay attention to what it is
telling you, you can take early preventative steps to boosting your immunity.
Here’s how to not get sick!
1. Listen to your body. It will let you know if it is starting to fight something. You may feel
unusually fatigued or sluggish. Perhaps you have a headache which is not your norm. You
may feel sensitive to the air as when your skin feels chilly or flushed. Are you sneezing,
have scratchy eyes or throat, or simply feeling “out of it”? Take these as cues to get
proactive!
2. Start taking extra good care of yourself: dress warmly, especially covering your neck and
feet, get 8+ hours of sleep, drink a LOT of warm liquids, do not have any sugar or alcohol which
will definitely weaken your resistance to illness.
3. Take supplements. Discontinue your other supplements for the time being and bolster up
with zinc, Vitamin C, D, and an appropriate herbal formula for your specific presentation. (I
can help you with that!)
4. Get some exercise. You can trust yourself with how much is appropriate for you by whether
you get energized or depleted after your workout. Spend some time getting sunlight,
especially in the morning. It’s ok if it’s cold outside. Put on your long johns and enjoy 10-20
minutes of our beautiful Colorado mornings.
5. Continue with this defensive self care and you may find that while everyone around you is
falling ill you are able to stay healthy.
