Kyle Brown is selected for House District 12

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Boulder County Democratic Party (BCDP) voted to select Kyle Brown to represent House District 12 in the state legislature. Brown won 41 votes, which was 80.39% of the 51 votes cast. The other candidates were David Skaggs who received seven votes (13.73%), Jennifer Kaaoush who received two votes (3.92%), Cynthia Martinez who received one vote (1.96%), and Alfredo Alvarado who received no votes. This decisive victory did not require a second ballot to be cast by the BCDP.

Brown earned his PhD in Genetics from Harvard, and has served as a senior advisor to senior U.S. Senators Tom Harkin (Iowa) and Frank Lautenberg (New Jersey), and two governors, Jared Polis (current Colorado governor) and John Hickenlooper (now serving as one of Colorado's Senators).

He has also served as a city council member for Louisville. In his presentation to the Boulder County Democratic Party, Brown cited his efforts to protect open space by banning toxic herbicides in city parks and open space.

As a city councilman, Brown supported moving the city to 100% renewable energy (using an electric grid network that doesn't rely on lithium batteries), supported increased , including electric vehicle charging stations in new development, and supported providing $1 million in COVID relief programs for local businesses struggling with the economic downturn.

While serving Louisville, Brown also led an effort to create a new Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion task force, and voted to protect residents from rate increases for stormwater and wastewater collection during the pandemic.

Brown also supported making housing more affordable through an inclusive zoning ordinance, and led an effort to pass what he described as "common sense gun safety measures," including the banning of assault weapons. He said he hopes to work in the legislature to pass a state-wide ban on assault weapons.

"I'm really proud of all of you (the BCDP) for keeping Colorado blue," said Brown in his opening statement before the ballot was cast. "I have worked with the legislature for the last 10 years and have vast experience at the federal, state, and local levels. We need to focus on taking climate action, improve affordable healthcare, end gun violence, provide stronger funding for schools and improve teachers' salaries, and help families who have lost their homes in the Marshall Fire. It will be the honor of a lifetime to represent our community at the statehouse."

Brown will be handing in his resignation as a Louisville city council member and deputy commissioner of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies before he is sworn in.
