All Local, All The Time

Local author Julie Kaewert draws crowd at Inkberry

A standing-room-only rapt crowd gathered at Inkberry Books on March 24 to enjoy local resident author Julie Kaewert's articulate discussion of her "Plumtree Series of Mysteries for Booklovers." Kaewert described the Penguin Random House published six book series as "bibliomysteries" set in England that follow Alex Plumtree, an "upstanding protagonist who always does the right thing" who is based upon her husband.

Kaewert's candid remarks about the creation of the series, her inspirations, the world of publishing, history and truth were thoughtful, poised and often funny. The series, which begins with "Unsolicited," follows the protagonist and ultimate hero, Alex Plumtree, a British book publisher who, as with all her novels, discovers a "terrible secret" that is eventually revealed. Kaewert's series involve intrigue, danger, romance, and a great deal of history, both literary and otherwise.

The Plumtree Series is a character-driven set of mysteries where Alex Plumtree "brings truth to light" and reminds us that history tends to repeat itself if one ignores the past. Her novels are written in the style of Dick Francis with careful plotting, twists, well fleshed out characters and always a lesson to learn.

"Unsolicited" was followed by "Unbound," "Unprintable," "Untitled, "Unsigned" and "Uncatalogued." Kaewert noted that many of the series' themes and plots were prescient and some unfolded in real life. "Real life plots came to be [such as] the war with Iraq, terrorism, rewriting history books, globalism and plague," Kaewert explained.

Gene Hayworth, owner of Inkberry Books said, "It was a real pleasure to host Julie Kaewert at Inkberry Books on Friday night and to learn more about her writing career and her Booklover's Mysteries series. Her presentation was entertaining and informative. Kaewert attracted a large group of book lovers who discovered our bookstore for the first time, and everyone had a delightful evening. I recommend the books highly to anyone looking for an entertaining read!"

Kate Effinger who attended the event with a group of friends noted, "I found it interesting when Julie described how much research is involved for each book. And impressive!" Janine Clark, who is new to Kaewert's writings said, "After hearing her talk about her books, I wanted to read them all!"

Kaewert also has written "biblioadventures," "biblioromances,"and is currently finishing a new series of parallel mysteries to the Plumtree series, "The National Trust Mysteries for Booklovers." She has lived in the Niwot area for about 30 years but was raised in Nebraska, Kaewert graduated from Dartmouth College, traveled the world and placed her heart and imagination firmly in England where she lived for several years.
