Caleb Law receives Sheriffs' scholarship

Caleb Law, a 2023 graduate of Niwot High School, received a $500 scholarship from the County Sheriffs of Colorado, which he plans to apply towards the cost of his continuing education. Boulder County Sheriff Curtis Johnson came to Niwot's Whistle Stop Park to present the award, with Caleb's parents, Michael and Michelle Law, and his older brothers, Jared Law and Evan Law, in attendance.

Every odd-numbered high school graduation year, one Boulder County resident is selected to receive the scholarship by the statewide County Sheriff's organization. While the award is not based on need, it is one of the factors considered.

Applicants can apply between January 1 and March 1 by submitting an application, including two letters of reference, a transcript, and a letter "setting forth reasons for the application and your plans for the future."

The organization's website states, "To carry out our commitment to the Honorary Members of the association, County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC) established a scholarship program in 1978. Since then the program has continued as a meaningful expression of the sheriffs' and CSOC's respect for education and training. We consider these scholarships as an investment in the future of Colorado's communities."

Law submitted an essay with his high school transcript and a resume when he applied. "Mostly I wrote about scouting with Troop 161 and how it has shaped the sense of my role in the community, with a focus on leadership and service," he said. Law completed his Eagle Scout project last fall, working on the 4th of July trailhead outside the Eldora area, making repairs to improve the ADA access.

"I found it through the high school database," Law said when asked how he came to apply. He will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder next fall where he plans to major in Integrative Physiology. "It's a mix of biology and kinesiology, a prelude to pre-med," he said. He already has his EMT certification, and an EKG tech certificate. He is also a member of HOSA-Future Health Professionals.

The award was presented to Law by Boulder County Sheriff Curtis Johnson on May 5. The scholarships are only available to students attending schools in Colorado. "I'm very grateful to the sheriff and the County Sheriffs of Colorado for the opportunity," Law said.
