All Local, All The Time
Dancing Under the Stars, an event that has been thriving in Niwot for four years, is still going strong. Every Friday night in the summer, a stage is set up in the parking lot of Cottonwood Square located at Niwot Road and 79th Street. Free dance lessons begin at 7:00 p.m. until 7:45 p.m., and then the dance floor overflows until 9:30 p.m., well after the stars have started to shine.
The DJ plays the genre of the week including salsa, swing, and Cuban salsa and the lessons get everyone ready for the fun ahead.
The event brings people from all over Colorado to Niwot but dancers come primarily from Boulder, Fort Collins, and Longmont, in addition to Niwot. Last week's teacher for the salsa dancing was Joseph Snowhawk from the Avalon Ballroom.
In 2019, the original Dancing Under the Stars, started by Tom Masterson, was canceled in its original location in Boulder because the venue was no longer available. Catherine McHale of Niwot saved the dance by bringing the event to Niwot and she and Masterson have been running it ever since.
Sponsors of this event include Deborah Read Fowler Realtor, The Niwot Market, Left Hand Animal Hospital, Niwot Tavern, Big Orange Square, Porchfront Homes, and the Niwot Business Association. Dancing Under the Stars is an excellent way to spend warm late summer nights, dancing under the stars and under beautiful string lights.
