All Local, All The Time
The Niwot High School boys soccer season has started off hot, as the Cougars are 2-0 now after the second week of the season. Niwot beat the Wheat Ridge Farmers 1-0 last Thursday. Niwot was much stronger than the score would indicate as they maintained possession throughout most of the game, getting solid shots on net all during the game.
Josh Rodriguez was able to kick Niwot off to an early lead with a goal assisted by Bo Gardner halfway through the first period. Niwot got good shots off all game, with Rodriguez, Jett Feiner, Gardner, and Xayden Del Rio all creating great offensive opportunities, with good shots on goal that were stopped by a great game from Wheat Ridges's goalie.
As for Niwot's goalies, Malachi Gilmore played the first 70 minutes recording two saves, while Lucas Willard played 10 minutes facing 0 shots on goal.
Niwot dominated the first half of the game, and apart from a smaller-than-ideal amount of goals, they never let the game slip. The Cougars peppered the net with shots, shooting into all corners, knocking in headers, and crashing non-stop until Rodriguez was able to slip one by for the lead.
Niwot was able to maintain the lead from then on, allowing only two shots to get on the net, with Gilmore stopping both. Wheat Ridge finished last season 12-4 and made the state playoffs. The Farmers were 1-0 coming into the game against Niwot. There is a lot to look forward to as a Niwot fan as Niwot has already established itself as a top team in the league.
Niwot has one game next week on Aug. 30 against the George Washington Patriots at 6:30 p.m. The game will be at George Washington High School.
