Hwy 287 safety and new trail from Sawhill Ponds to Erie studied

Two transportation projects on the periphery of Niwot and Gunbarrel are ramping up and seeking citizen input.

The "US 287 Vision Zero Safety + Mobility Study" is driving towards eliminating serious injuries and fatalities in accidents on US Highway 287. Phase I of the study focused on mobility through Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for the section between Longmont and Broomfield. Phase I has been completed. A report has been published and is available for public review and comment.

Phase II of the study is underway and will focus on safety. The public can participate in the process through the county's self-guided virtual open house. You may view virtual posters and comment upon the latest ideas until the deadline on September 10.

Much like the CO 119 Safety and Mobility project, the US 287 project might provide BRT, a bikeway and intersection modifications.

The second transportation project that is entering the planning process is the Boulder to Erie Regional Trail (BERT). This project was originally named the "RTD Rail Trail" (Regional Transportation District) because it would make use of the old Union Pacific rail line that goes east from around Sawhill Ponds on 75th Street. Boulder County Regional Trails Planner Matt Wempe explained in 2016, "RTD bought [the rail line] in from Union Pacific a while back as part of the North FasTracks line. It may be used as an alternate route for rail up to Boulder, but that's so far in the future we'd like to use it for a multi-use trail in the meantime."

BERT would be a soft-surface, off-street, multi-use recreational regional trail for people, bicycles and possibly equestrians.

Workshops and presentation events have taken place since 2019. The next event will be an open house at the Erie Community Library on September 13 at 5 p.m. The public can learn more about the project, different trail options and alignments.

More information about the open house is available at:
