Student Athlete of the Week Kyle Davidson

Kyle Davidson is enjoying a successful final chapter of his Niwot High boys tennis career with his partner Sebastian Moy.

The Cougars senior won six of his last seven regular season No. 1 doubles matches, according to MaxPreps, and continued that momentum with a dominant 6-1, 6-0, match victory in the first round of the Class 4A team state championships on Sept. 27. Despite feeling under the weather, Davidson still had enough strength to help Niwot advance past George Washington High School.

"I don't know if it was the best I ever played, but I think we played pretty solidly and that was important," Davidson said. "We just were consistent. We didn't make that many errors and I think that's just how he won."

Even as a veteran varsity player, Davidson added that he entered the match hoping to refine multiple areas of his game.

"I know that for the past couple of matches, we struggled with our returns a bit, so I wanted to make our returns better and (improve) our consistency and making first serves," Davidson said.

Davidson and Moy, a junior, have a few years of experience playing together on doubles teams, giving the two upperclassmen an important leg up on the court.

"We were partners my sophomore year when we were No. 2 doubles, so I think that helped," Davidson said. "I think we've been playing really well together. We're feeling good about that. We're not super similar personalities, but I think we play well together."

In the month of September, Davidson and Moy beat No. 1 doubles teams from Cheyenne Mountain and Mullen, two schools that consistently produce strong boys tennis teams. Additionally, Davidson and Moy downed duos from Severance, Thompson Valley and Riverdale Ridge.

Davidson also showed his versatility earlier this season when he slid into a No. 3 singles match against Northridge and managed a 6-2, 6-2 win.

As a senior who has experienced some success, Davidson hopes that his approach to tennis will rub off on some of Niwot's younger players. "I've just been trying to lead by example," Davidson said.

Following the Cougars' loss to Colorado Academy in the team state tournament quarterfinals, Davidson's attention now shifts to qualifying for the individual state championships. He can punch his ticket to state with either a first or second-place finish at the Region 5 tournament, which is set for Oct. 4-5 at Niwot.
