All Local, All The Time
The "Pride of Niwot" Cougar Marching Band has made monumental strides in recent years as they keep adding new traditions and energy to their program. Most recently, a group of students from the band traveled to the Niwot football game against Mead High School on Thursday, Oct. 19.
"This is the first time I am aware of [that this has happened]," said Wade Hendricks, Director of Bands at Niwot. "Having a group of students who love having the opportunity to play this much is great, even if we don't do our halftime show."
Hendricks also expressed gratitude towards Mead's band director, Abby Koehler, who was enthusiastically welcoming to the band and excited for this level of cross-school band comradery. Mead generously provided candy and glow sticks for the NHS pep band members who sat on the opposite side of the Mead High School football field.
Both bands usually alternate playing between downs, but for this new and unique experience, each band played while their football team was on offense to bring high-spirited energy to cheer on their teams. During halftime, Niwot's pep band members went to the other side of the field to sit on the track and watch Mead perform its halftime performance of "Friday Night Fever" featuring the hit songs "Stayin' Alive," "I've Had the Time of My Life," and "Footloose."
While the Pride of Niwot was able to watch this performance several weeks ago at the St. Vrain Band Night on Oct. 4, this was a new way to show support for another band program and display the love of bands that marching band kids share with each other.
The evening didn't stop there, however. At the end of the game, Niwot was invited to reprise "Sweet Caroline" with the Mead High School marching band in the stands, just as they had done at the end of St. Vrain Band Night. While there might be a rivalry between schools and football teams, marching bands seem to consistently indicate that no rivalry exists between them. Rather, they demonstrate their shared love for the art across the extended band family.
