Wrestlers struggle at the Keith Kilker Invite

Niwot High School wrestlers competed at the 9th Annual Keith Kilker Invitational Tournament at Weld Central High School Dec. 16, but attrition left the Cougars with a small roster. The format of the tournament has each wrestler compete against wrestlers in the same weight class from each of the four other schools in a round-robin format. Thus, there are no elimination rounds, and each wrestler comes away with a personal won-loss record.

“We have been dealing with some sickness and a few injuries as well as some kids leaving for break,” Cougar Coach Bobby Matthews said. “So our roster was not full this weekend which made it very difficult to compete in a dual tournament format.”

With a smaller roster, Niwot lost each of the five dual meets within the Invitational, but there were some bright spots for the Cougars.

“Ryder Evans continued his dominance and went undefeated for the weekend,” Matthews said. “He went 6-0 which brought his record to 16-2 on the season. His two losses were the first weekend, both losses to ranked kids by two points. Both matches we feel he should and can win. Since then he has just been fantastic on the mat.”

The Cougars lost to Rock Canyon (51-24), Cheyenne South (41-30), University (45-15), Denver North (46-17), and Resurrection Christian (42-17).
