Niwot High girls swim takes seventh at BoCo Invite

As the young Niwot High School girls swim and dive team continues to gain experience, the results are beginning to follow. Head coach Ella Thramann’s Cougars participated in the BoCo Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 13, and finished seventh among 13 local schools of various classes.

NHS scored 637 team points at the Broomfield Community Center pool, just ahead of Silver Creek High School’s 588. Fairview High School took first with 1,131 points.

With less than one month remaining in their high school careers, Niwot seniors Reese Lavigne and Charlotte Heuer both impressed. Lavigne’s best swim came in the 50 backstroke (fifth place) while Heuer took third in the 50 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 freestyle.

Sophomore standout Hannah Hooven enjoyed one of the better days among Niwot underclassmen. Highlighted by her sixth-place performance in the 50-yard butterfly, she also took seventh in the 50 back and helped Niwot to top-20 finishes in both the 400 and 200 freestyle relays.

Niwot’s lone first-place result came in the 1-meter dive as junior Elizabeth (Izzy) Fay scored a meet-record 485.95 points. Fay, who took third in last year’s Class 4A State Championships, continues to improve with February’s state meet on the horizon.

Behind Fay, sophomore Thalia Milam and junior Lexi Nervin took ninth and 16th, respectively, for Niwot in the 1-meter dive. Milam placed seventh in the 100 individual medley as well.

Additionally, Niwot junior Devi Burnett placed sixth in the 50 back, joining Lavigne and Hooven in the top 10.

Niwot’s dual meet against Centaurus High School on Monday, Jan. 15 was canceled due to inclement weather. The Cougars are now scheduled to visit Mountain View High School in Loveland for a dual meet on Jan. 16 before facing Longmont High School and Centaurus High School in a varsity triangular the following day. After that, Niwot competes in the district tournament on Jan. 20.
