All Local, All The Time
Carson Lyle, Editor-in-Chief of "The Green and Black," and a NHS senior with hopes of attending Northeastern University to study journalism contributed to this article.
"The Green and Black" is Niwot High School's entirely student-run newspaper which reports on issues and events in the St. Vrain Valley School District that students might find interesting. Its reporters also tap into opinion writing and share their voices on policies regarding their education, or whatever they feel passionate about.
Carson Lyle, the Editor-in-Chief of "The Green and Black," chose to go to Niwot High partly based upon whether it had a good student newspaper. Four years later, Lyle has shown that The Green and Black is a thriving, inclusive, important school asset.
Named after the school's colors, The Green and Black allows students to feel uplifted by their voice, and allows students to find importance within themselves as well as in their writing. Articles are curated by Green and Black Club members and are published on The Green and Black's new website. The Green and Black is recently updating its website making it more accessible for readers. Designing the new website was Lyle's senior CAS project, for which she has worked over fifty hours.
Last semester, the core leaders of The Green and Black made some significant changes. One was that leaders decided that club meetings would be held bi-weekly on Thursdays instead of being entirely virtual. Meetings start at 3:00 p.m. and generally last about 30 minutes.
Meetings usually consist of discussing article ideas, assigning reporters to each article, listening to Taylor Swift, and always indulging in snacks provided by members. Meetings are incredibly lively and smiles can be found easily. The club has turned into one large family whose members joke around and talk about their days.
Staff also decided to change how articles are displayed and published. Historically, articles have been published in monthly newsletters sent to parents and teachers. Now articles are published on a running rotation. Once articles are sent in, they are reviewed by the Head Content Editor, Sara Taylor, and are then sent to Junior Editor-in-Chief, Jack McGuirk, for a Spanish translation. Edited articles are then published onto The Green and Black website.
Ken Benson has generously donated his time and energy to The Green and Black as its teacher sponsor. Benson also leads the Investment Club at Niwot High School, and both The Green and Black and the Investment Club have developed a good relationship, and though there is some competitiveness between the two, it is all in good fun.
The website is still in the final stages of creation and should be live by the end of the month. The Green and Black staff members are looking for a $200 donation to purchase their own domain for their website. They appreciate any assistance from the community. Donations can be made by emailing Carson Lyle at [email protected].
