All Local, All The Time
On Tuesday, Jan. 30, the auditorium of Frederick High School resonated with the combined talents of 194 students from across the St. Vrain Valley School District for the High School Honor Choir Concert. Fifty-three of those students were from Niwot High School.
The other schools that participated were Erie High School, Frederick High School, Longmont High School, Lyons Middle Senior High School, Mead High School, Silver Creek High School and Skyline High School.
The annual Honor Choir Concert showcased the dedication and musical talent of these singers, who had auditioned from schools across the district to earn their place in this prestigious ensemble.
Niwot High School was particularly well-represented in the Honor Choir. "We had 53 students make it into Honor Choir from Niwot," said Laura Walters, the NHS choir teacher. "A few people were unable to participate due to various scheduling conflicts and we had a few people sick on the day, but in the end, Niwot had 47 singers participate in Honor Choir."
The concert featured two choirs. The Treble Choir, consisting of 74 voices, was conducted by M.B. Krueger, with Angela Reeder on the piano, and the Mixed Choir, led by Brian Stone with Walkton Lott accompanying on piano, was composed of 120 singers.
"It is wonderful for our students to get to collaborate with all the top singers in the district for a wonderful day of music making," Walters said. "They have the opportunity to feel challenged and feel super accomplished after a rewarding day of hard work doing what they love. It is one of the events I look forward to most outside of our regular school day every year."
Students echoed Walters' sentiment, highlighting the unique value of the Honor Choir experience. Fred Zorgdrager, a senior at Niwot High School, said, "Honor Choir gives people who truly love music a chance to be surrounded by others who feel the exact same way. I've done Honor Choir almost every year since seventh grade and I always come back because it gives me a chance to challenge myself and become the best singer I can."
The concert program included a diverse selection of choral pieces which served as a testament to the power of music to inspire, teach and unite.
