Why do I have to get more than two cleanings per year?

One of the most common questions dentists and hygienists receive is some

form of: “Why do you want me to come for my re-care appointments three or four times per year? My

neighbor only goes twice! And my insurance only covers 2 per year!” We hear you, so here’s

the gist of why:

1. You have been diagnosed with gum (periodontal) disease, a chronic

condition where the normal germs in your mouth have contributed to the

destruction of your gums and the bone which holds your teeth in place. The

important part here is, there is no cure for gum disease. Having 3 or 4 cleanings

per year is the only way to keep the harmful bacteria low enough that no

further damage can occur to your gums and bone.

2. Your oral environment (mouth) tends to build tartar (hardened plaque)

more rapidly than the average person, even if you have not yet been diagnosed

with gum disease! So having your teeth cleaned more often is required to keep this

buildup at bay and prevent periodontal disease from developing in the first place.

3. You have other risk factors including systemic disease such as diabetes.

Periodontal disease increases the risks of many chronic and/or inflammatory

diseases.

4. Your providers at Niwot Dental want what is best for your oral health and

overall health, even if that means having your teeth cleaned more than what your

insurance plan may cover!
