Student Athlete of the Week Cassie Chen

Armed with more confidence, Cassie Chen is transitioning from the No. 2 doubles line to No. 3 singles entering her junior season on the Niwot High School girls tennis team.

While Chen played in a handful of No. 3 singles matches last season, she believes the move won't be too difficult. Her primary concern is contributing her best wherever Niwot head coach Aimee Hites needs her most.

"I'm really excited to play singles this year and just be able to work with the team," Chen said.

She still must navigate a few minor differences in approach with her new solo role, however. Compared to doubles, Chen shared that serving and strong groundstrokes become even more important when playing singles.

Last season, Chen won one of her three No. 3 singles matches, according to her MaxPreps profile. She also secured at least four No. 2 doubles wins and competed in the Class 4A state tournament alongside Magnolia Valentine.

This year, keeping things simple on and off the court will be critical to Chen's success.

"During the offseason, I've mostly been working on the mental part of tennis," Chen said. "I feel like that was such a big part of what affected me last year."

Chen will also be assuming a greater leadership role this spring as an upperclassman. For her, it's all about setting an example for Niwot's younger players. That means working hard, showing up to practice on time, and taking care of the little things, she believes.

"It's important for me to set a good example for everyone else and help them get a better feel of what it's exactly like to be on this team," Chen said.

Chen added that she sees bright futures in many of her younger teammates, making her job as a leader all the more important.

"I think we're looking really good," Chen said. "We have a lot of new players that can help fill up our lower double positions, which is nice."

Niwot's first match of the new season was Tuesday, March 5 against Fairview High School. Results were not available at press time.
