All Local, All The Time
Niwot High School is host to over 60 student-run clubs, and one stand-out is the Political Action Club (PAC).
In the words of co-founder Oliver Fowler, "Niwot Political Action Club is a Niwot-focused club that provides a safe space for NHS students to debate important political news, talk about issues, and get involved in politics. It exists to provide a bias-free and moderated outlet for people that isn't just a single issue."
Fowler and Evan Debusk created PAC in September of 2023 with the hope of attracting student members and create a space for civil discussion of difficult topics among students. PAC often participates in Gender Studies club as well as Niwot's GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) Club. Club members include Evan Debusk, Morgan Fisher, Oliver Fowler, Aine Cruit, and Peter Rosen.
The club meets on Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. in the classroom of their teacher facilitator Sarah Demmel.
The Political Action Club has done a multitude of things this year to benefit the community. They hosted a fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders that included putting decorated donation boxes in classrooms. They hosted topic-specific meetings regarding issues like voting, the war in Gaza, and other important events and issues worthy of discussion.
"This club really matters because it makes me feel comfortable discussing contentious issues in a place I know I'm going to be respected, and disagreements foster better discussions when handled productively," said Fowler.
The Political Action Club is a strong force at Niwot High School, and gives young people the opportunity to share their views and opinions on topics that affect the world in which they live. Members feel that without this club, students may not have the chance to experience an environment in which they feel comfortable speaking openly about the current state of the world.
