The Niwot High School boys volleyball squad has gotten off to a strong start as the Cougars head into spring break with a 2-1 record. Niwot played one game last week against Cherry Creek High School, winning the series 3-1. Niwot was originally scheduled to play Arvada West High School on Thursday, but the match was postponed due to snow.
Niwot took a bit to get going against Cherry Creek, dropping the first series to the Bruins 25-21. Niwot bounced back, taking the next set 25-18, before going on a run, grabbing the third and fourth sets, 25-14 and 25-21, to take the match.
Junior Jenu Ngialah led the team in kills, getting 16 over the four sets. Shen Lam followed with nine, while Diego Kheng’s eight, Murray Avila's six, Gabe Victor’s four, Sage Xiong’s three, and Owen Powers’ one followed him.
Niwot served with an 86% success rate, scoring directly off nine of those serves. Charlie Kirtland and Xiong led the way with three aces, while Lam, Victor, and Avila had one each. Avila led the team with both one solo block and three block assists. Victor also led with three block assists, while Kheng added two, and Xiong and Power added one each.
Victor also led the team in digs, with 14 while Kirtland’s 13, Lam’s 10, Ngialah’s nine, Xiong’s eight, Ethan Erekson’s two, Avila’s one, and Kheng’s one followed.
Niwot is now 2-1 on the year and with this next week off due to spring break, there will be no upcoming games. Niwot’s match against Arvada West has yet to be rescheduled, but will likely be thrown onto the end of Niwot’s schedule.
