"Panic Peak" by Bill Liggett - Can geoengineering save our planet?

Bill Liggett, a native Coloradan and recent newcomer to the Niwot community, is presenting his new book, "Panic Peak," on Friday, April 12 in conjunction with Inkberry Books. "Panic Peak" investigates interesting potential geoengineering solutions in the format of a fictional thriller. The book launch and signing will be held at Winot Cafe at 7 p.m.

The venue for the presentation was changed from Una Vida to Winot Coffee. Reservations can be made online.

Dr. Liggett is something of a renaissance man, having gained an undergraduate degree in geology with postgraduate degrees in education and social behavioral science. Additionally, he worked two summers as a glaciologist in Washington State while living at the research station on Mount Olympus.

Liggett, the author, utilizes all his experience to draw the reader into intensely colorful descriptive yet technical narratives that fast track into action adventure in his first book of the Warm World Adventure Series, "Watermelon Snow" followed by his second book, "Panic Peak," a thriller.

His human behavior studies inform his characters to make them real and relatable, whether protagonist or villain. His geoscience and glaciology background, coupled with an interest in atmospheric science, produce real present day explanations for climate change, its drivers and possible outcomes that will be deleterious for all life on this planet if allowed to proceed unchecked at its current rate.

Liggett's Master of Education background enables him to present the needed technical details in a way that is easily understandable while driving the action-based plot forward. The element of geoengineering with its possible solutions, but also unforeseen consequences, creates the basis for his thriller.

At the same time he presents the reader with fodder for deep reflection of some tricky moral choices that may be necessary in order to save the planet. The bottomline, says this author, is that we must not be afraid to do the geoengineering studies because they may present solutions to our current global warming, which is not sustainable for the planet. Liggett is clear that if we do not study these possible solutions as well as their potential unintended consequences, we may be missing opportunities to address this existential crisis.

The main characters from "Watermelon Snow," Dr. Kate Landry, an atmospheric scientist and glaciologist conducting studies at the Blue Glacier on Mount Olympus, and Dr. Grant Poole, a human behavioral scientist, return in the "Panic Peak" book. Both of these characters have great strengths yet personal challenges that inform their character and draw the reader into their narrative. While the action in "Watermelon Snow" springs from the introduction of a pre-Covid pandemic, "Panic Peak"'s thriller revolves around the use of geoengineering and how its outcomes can be used for good or evil. This is a fast-moving page-turner.

Themes of character conflict, climate conflict and moral conflict should make for interesting discussion at the "Panic Peak" book launch.
