All Local, All The Time
Niwot High School is host to over 60 student-run clubs, and one stand-out is the Earth Club.
Niwot High School's Earth Club is a club in which students of all grades "explore environmentalism through an ecological lens, combining gardening and environmental initiatives to build an understanding of the earth," according to Elena Krone, member and leader of Earth Club.
Niwot High's Garden Club and Environmental Club became defunct during the 2022-23 school year. In response, students took action and combined both clubs into one to create Earth Club. The merging of the two clubs turned out well, allowing for the club to make a bigger impact and have a larger outreach.
"Despite some growing pains, we have started to grow a variety of plants inside, like tomatoes, cilantro, lemon cucumber, forget-me-nots, marigolds, and more, which we will move outside once the weather warms up," said Krone in an email. "In addition, we have cleaned out the garden beds behind the school (quite a project), and are using Instagram to spread the word about different environmental initiatives, like composting or the petition for the 79th Street Tennis Club," continued Krone when describing Earth Club's activities this year.
Regular club members include Julia Freischlag, Elena Krone, Grecia Torres-Bravo, Hongming Zhao, Miranda Torres-Bravo, Nataly Rodriguez Valdez, Kevin Lino, Harper Rodriguez, and Brynn Jackson. Leadership members are Freischlag, Krone, and Torres-Bravo. Club sponsor and science teacher Nathan Gravelding facilitates meetings in his classroom.
"Although it was our first time growing plants, we learned a lot about the process and organization that it takes, while also growing as a chaotically dedicated team," said club member Zhao. Earth Club will continue to grow with the help of current and future members with the intention of informing the public on everything environmental, while also making a direct difference in the community.
