All Local, All The Time
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are an interesting example of the way human skulls and mouths have evolved over time. Many dentists advise their patients to have their wisdom teeth removed, but why?
Typically, wisdom teeth finish developing and make their presence known around 18-20 years of age. At this age, the body is quick to heal and wisdom teeth can be extracted with very little risk of complication or down time. That is the first reason why your dentist may have advised you or your children to have them removed. This is simply the easiest time to heal without complications. But, why? Simply put, it’s a matter of space and risk. The modern human jaw and mouth is simply too small for an extra 4 teeth! Because of this, wisdom teeth tend to be “cramped” into odd positions, sometimes even upside down or completely sideways. This lack of space can and does cause your other teeth to shift or develop cavities and/or gum disease. Because of this very real risk to your healthy teeth, it is better in the long term to remove them and the risks they carry. Even if you’re older, rest assured wisdom teeth extraction is generally considered safe with very little risk or downtime.
