All Local, All The Time
Western Wellness Chiropractic, owned by Barry Mathieu, a chiropractor with 10 years of experience, recently opened in the space at 198 2nd Avenue in Niwot above Chill Cryotherapy and Recovery. Mathieu seeks to educate people and help with spinal health, posture, neurological dysfunctions, and mobility. The practice also provides spinal decompression work, which takes pressure off of the nerves that run along the spine.
One of the reasons that Mathieu became a chiropractor was his own chiropractic experience after an injury. Mathieu was an athlete in baseball and football in high school but injured himself while snow skiing. Before the accident, he had a scholarship to Baylor University in Texas for baseball.
"I hit a tree while snow skiing and broke my hip... I was in a wheelchair for a long time, and I was able to recover and walk, but I had a lot of discomfort and inner hip pain after that accident," Mathieu explained. "I went and saw a chiropractor, and he adjusted me. After that, I got really interested in what a chiropractor does and how they help people."
His recovery complete, Mathieu was able to continue playing baseball at the University of Texas, where he was a pitcher, along with studying sociology and other sciences. He later went on to get his doctor of chiropractic degree at Parker University in Dallas, Texas. He has expressed interest in helping young athletes in Niwot with conditioning, avoiding injury, and recovering from injuries.
Mathieu was also inspired by Todd Whipole, DC, who is a chiropractor out of in Dripping Springs, Texas, who he assisted during his education at the University of Texas. Mathieu is enjoying opening a business in Niwot and getting to know the community better.
"When I came here, I had such an overwhelming sense of community," he said. "I was like, 'Wow, this place is awesome.' It reminded me of my hometown in Texas, which was a smaller town, but everyone knew each other." Mathieu said, "[Niwot] felt like home, it's hard not to be happy here.... All the support from all the holistic businesses here is pretty cool too."
Mathieu has already become involved in the community, volunteering as a greeter at Rock & Rails for the Niwot Business Association.
