Grass fire behind NHS on Thursday, July 11

Mountain View Fire Rescue reported on Instagram that just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, Boulder County Dispatch received a call reporting a potential grass fire near Niwot High School.

When Battalion 2260 arrived on the scene, they found a grass fire on the east side of Cougar Trail, next to the Boulder and Left Hand Ditch, between the football field and tennis courts. The flames were in an area approximately 100 feet by 8 feet and about 5 feet high.

The Cougar Trail is frequented by residents of the area who walk their dogs and ride bikes.

According to the report, Engine 2201 and Boulder Rural Fire's Brush 2332 arrived at the scene and "knocked out" the fire. Battalion 2260 reported to Dispatch that the fire was extinguished just after 5:30 p.m. The burned area did not cross the trail or the ditch, and stopped just north of the memorial stone for NHS grad Randy Rehn, who died in Iraq in 2003 while serving in the U.S. Army.

No structures were affected by the fire or injuries were reported. According to Rick Tillery, the public information officer, the cause has been officially classified as undetermined.
