All Local, All The Time
Since childhood, the calling to be a teacher was ever-present for Heatherwood Elementary School fifth grade teacher Anna Lyttle. Early experiences as a camp counselor, music teacher assistant, and outdoor education instructor solidified this desire. These roles provided valuable skills but also confirmed a passion for working with children.
After completing her Bachelor's in American Studies and Sociology from Colby College, Lyttle ventured into the realms of advertising, marketing and sales. She thrived in the fast-paced, creative environments of newspapers and advertising agencies, where deadlines and innovation fueled her drive. However, she felt a persistent pull towards the joy she found in guiding and mentoring children.
Summers were spent leading outdoor adventures, and her role as a volunteer CASA (court-appointed special advocate) reinforced her commitment to helping young people. It was during this time that Lyttle realized her true calling. She decided to return to school to pursue teaching, earning a master's degree in educational psychology and her teaching certification from University of Colorado Boulder.
With her new qualifications, Lyttle embarked on a journey as a substitute teacher in the Boulder Valley School District in 2005. This role allowed her to explore various schools, each with its unique energy and community. It was during this time that she discovered Heatherwood Elementary School, a school that immediately felt like home.
The welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, along with the collaborative environment among teachers and staff, captivated Lyttle. She knew she had found her place. Now, entering her 18th year at Heatherwood, Anna reflected on the incredible journey that brought her there.
Lyttle said that Heatherwood Elementary is more than just a school, it is a community. Families look out for one another, and children can safely walk or bike to school. When Lyttle started her own family, she moved to the Heatherwood neighborhood because she wanted her children to experience the same supportive environment she cherished. Being a teacher, parent, and community member at Heatherwood is a source of immense pride for Lyttle.
What truly fuels her passion for teaching are the relationships she builds with her students and their families. Each new school year brings a fresh group of young minds and Lyttle embraces the challenges of creating a supportive classroom community. The ever-changing nature of teaching keeps her on her toes, as every day and every year present new experiences. Lyttle has a deep passion for learning new skills and gaining knowledge to meet evolving needs and interests of her students.
Lyttle's contributions extend beyond the classroom. As a long time member of the PBIS (Positive Behavior Support) team, she had played an important role in fostering a culture of inclusivity and positive reinforcement for all students. Her involvement in the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) has provided opportunities to support the school and organize fun activities for students and families. More recently, Lyttle joined the Hearthwood Educational Advisory Team (HEAT), working on initiatives to increase school enrollment and ensure a bright future for Heatherwood Elementary.
When Lyttle is not in the classroom, she finds happiness in nature and music. Hiking, skiing, camping, and exploring Colorado with family and friends are her favorite pastimes. She loves playing and singing music, whether it is at home or at music festivals. She said the activities provide a balance to her professional life, recharging her spirit and keeping her connected to her passions.
Lyttle's approach to challenges is grounded in positivity and open-mindedness. She believes in the power of active listening, understanding diverse perspectives, and being flexible in her thinking. Collaboration and cooperation are the heart of her philosophy, knowing that the best outcomes come from working together as a community.
