All Local, All The Time

International band "pops-up" for impromptu concert in Niwot

Niwot loves its live music. Events and venues such as Rock & Rails, The House Blend Band, Dancing Under the Stars, and The Wheel House make Niwot a music destination. Although most of Niwot's live music and events are planned ahead and publicized on business websites and social media, now and then a spontaneous concert pops up. One such impromptu event occurred at The Wheel House on Friday, July 19, with less than 24 hours planning.

The Heart Collectors, an Australian-based band from New South Wales, whose style is inspired by 60s and 70s folk music, is on their U.S. tour and happened upon Niwot this past weekend. The band had just finished its Austin to Boston leg of their tour, selling out 13 shows, and arrived in Colorado through a request from the Conscious Alliance Festival.

Coming from lower altitude, they discovered the very real impact the altitude can have. In order to adjust to the altitude, they have been reaching out to local venues for pop-up performances to help acclimate to the altitude. The "Space Between Tour" is in promotion of their fifth album.

"Eric (Bergeson, owner of The Wheel House) was open to allowing this impromptu event," said Drew Porter, manager for the band. It was initiated only the evening prior (Thursday, July 18) while they were driving past Niwot and felt moved to pop in.

Members of the band are Kymrie Henge, Reuben Loire, Mobius Barnaby, and Tristan DaFoe. They have been described by Folk Alliance International as "(radiating) warmth through their music and personalities - any interaction with them will leave you smiling." Their harmonies, musicality, variety in instrumental abilities, and overall energy engaged everyone lucky enough to be at The Wheel House that evening.

The Heart Collectors performed a mixture of heartfelt original songs as well as upbeat sing-along classics such as "Country Roads" by John Denver and "I'm Gonna Be" by The Proclaimers. Audience members sang and clapped along with this captivating group.

While it came about by an unusual set of circumstances, this jovial concert was surely captivating for anyone who happened upon the venue on Friday.
