All Local, All The Time
After a few drops of rain fell early at the Rock & Rails concert Aug. 22, the evening cooled off and the crowd came out to hear hometown girl Nalani Clisset and her band, The Nalani Effect, entertain the crowd with a mix of blues, funk and soul standards.
Joined by Regi Wooten on guitar and Adam Wooten on drums, from the renowned Wooten Brothers, Nalani, her stage name, poured out her heart and soul on vocals while playing bass. Tunes included Chaka Khan's "Tell Me Something Good" as well as a Tina Turner-like version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary."
Emcee Satir DeMarco was a proud momma as her daughter, who grew up in Niwot and now hails from Nashville, took the stage.
Brian Brooks and Friends opened for the Nalani Effect, with a mix of country and country rock. The Loveland-based band entertained the crowd with covers of Marshall Tucker Band tunes, as well as Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," which Brooks said was one of the earliest songs he learned as a child.
The tip jar recipients were Mwebaza Foundation, a non-profit organization started out of Niwot Elementary School by now-retired teacher Dale Peterson, and the Whistle Stop Park fund of the Niwot Cultural Arts Association.
Mwebaza Foundation Executive Director Devaki Douillard and several volunteers were on hand to explain the work of the group, which supports elementary schools in Colorado partnering with schools in Uganda, where students from both sides of the world are able to learn from each other. The foundation also supports small businesses in Uganda which allows the schools to carry out programming.
The foundation's website describes the mission, "We create new pathways that inspire global citizenship and foster sustainable change through cross-cultural education and investment in social enterprise.
In spite of the early rain, the tip jar proceeds were over $1,130 for the evening. Next week is the final week of the summer concert series, with Hazel Miller as the headliner, and Nalani Clisset as the opener.
