All Local, All The Time
On Friday, Sept. 6, Cottonwood Square transformed into a lively celebration of country dance as Dancing Under the Stars hosted its first-ever country dance night. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and the clinking of cowboy boots, as twinkling lights shone overhead casting a soft glow on the crowd below. The blend of cowboy hats, denim, pearl snap shirts, and lively country tunes gave the night an authentic feel.
Participants were treated to an array of country dance styles, featuring lessons on the two-step, country waltz, nightclub two-step, cowboy cha-cha, and classic line dancing. The diverse selection of dances ensured that everyone, from beginners to seasoned dancers, had something to enjoy and learn.
Mamie Kakes, the evening's dance instructor, guided the crowd through the steps with precision and ease. She ensured that dancers of all skill levels felt comfortable, offering personalized advice while keeping the energy fun and light-hearted. Her warm teaching style allowed everyone to get the hang of the dances.
The night's music selection was expertly provided by DJ Farrell Woods, who kept the energy high with a selection of classic country tunes. As the music played in the background, laughter rang out across the square, with dancers twirling and swaying in time with the rhythm.
Couples glided across the dance floor, their boots scuffling the dance floor in perfect sync with the beat. The energy was contagious, and the night was filled with moments of pure joy as people bonded over the shared love of dance. The group dynamic was strong, with partners frequently switching throughout the night encouraging everyone to mingle and enjoy the fun atmosphere.
From the upbeat tempo of the two-step to the smooth movements of the country waltz, the style variety kept the dancers on their toes. Line dances also brought the crowd together, creating camaraderie on the dance floor. Line dancing is a staple in country music culture, and it did not disappoint. The dance floor was filled with synchronized steps and plenty of laughter as participants found their groove.
A beautiful, clear evening set the stage, with no rain in sight and a pleasant breeze making it comfortable to dance the night away. The combination of the soft lighting from the string lights and the backdrop of the evening sky created a picturesque scene for all involved. As the night wore on, the energy on the dance floor never wavered. Couples and groups alike embraced the space, swirling and spinning through their newfound steps under the stars.
Looking ahead, Dancing Under the Stars will return on Friday, Sept. 13, with an exciting salsa dance night from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Joseph Snowhawk will be back to lead the lesson and DJ the music, promising an energetic last night of salsa dancing in Cottonwood Square. With just two weeks left, the penultimate event is sure to draw another enthusiastic crowd. Then, on Sept. 20, the 2024 season finale will feature a swing night to close out another successful season of Dancing Under the Stars in style.
The event is funded by the Niwot LID, and sponsored by the Niwot Business Association, and Cottonwood Square, as well as local business sponsors Porchfront Homes, DRF Real Estate, Big Orange Square, Raza Fresa, Una Vida, and the Niwot Tavern.
