Niwot bats explode at Berthoud Invitational

Following a tough 4-1 loss to Holy Family High School at home last week, the Niwot High School Cougar varsity softball team came out strong over the weekend in the Berthoud Invitational tournament, scoring 49 runs and winning three out of four games.

The Cougars lost a close game one to the Fort Collins High School Lambkins by a score of 6-3. Junior Payton Johnson and freshman Payton Stokes each drove in one run for the Cougars, with senior Kianna Butler scoring the third and final run on an error by the shortstop.

In game two against Resurrection Christian School, the Cougars quickly took the lead in the top of the first inning, scoring seven runs, with RBIs from May Herrera, Anna Halverson, Simone Paterno, Madison Dodge, Mandy Roth, and Kianna Butler.

The Cougars scored another seven runs in the second inning, and four more in the third, securing the win by run rule in just three innings, defeating Resurrection Christian 18-2.

"I am proud of the team for figuring some things out after a tough loss to Fort Collins," said Coach Bobby Matthews. He said the players "answered the challenge set up by the coaching staff" and came out with an 18-2 victory.

The Cougars were back Saturday morning for game three against Montezuma-Cortez High School. After a scoreless first inning, Angela Arosemena led off the second inning with a single, followed by a home run by Johnson.

The Cougars kept the bats hot into the third inning, loading up the bases for Paterno who doubled to centerfield, scoring three RBIs, ramping up the score 6-0.

Saleen Amaya kept it going in the fourth inning with a leadoff single to centerfield. Hits from Butler, Herrera, Halverson, and Arosemena set the stage for another home run by Johnson, securing the win 12-5.

Butler allowed no hits, no walks, and no runs in the first two innings, striking out four. Roth, who pitched four innings in relief, surrendered two hits and five runs, striking out four and walking six.

In their final game of the weekend against The Classical Academy, the Cougars quickly jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning after a bases-loaded double by Johnson sent all of the runners home, followed by an RBI single by Paterno, and an RBI double by Amaya.

The Cougars added another run in the second inning with an RBI single by Halverson, and two more in the third on a double by Butler.

The Cougars totaled 12 hits in Game 4 with Amaya, Halverson, and Stokes each collecting two hits, Johnson with three runs batted in, and Stokes with two stolen bases.

Coach Matthews commented that "coming into the tournament, we were batting .198. In the tournament, we batted .445, bringing our team average up to .332." He added, "Kianna struck out 30 batters in 14.2 innings. Solid tournament overall but we still have so much room to grow."

The Cougars play at home on Tuesday, Sept. 10, against Fairview High School and away at Longmont High School on Thursday, Sept. 12.
