Niwot boys soccer team secures 2-0 win over Prairie View

The Niwot High School boys soccer team beat Prairie View High School 2-0 at home on Wednesday bumping their record to 4-1.

The Cougars and their solid defense once again left their opponent scoreless, posting shutouts in the last three games.

Seniors Gavin Engtrakul and Jay Scharfe each scored a goal in the second half, bringing their combined season total to four goals.

After a scoreless first half, Engtrakul set up Scharfe for the first goal of the game, and junior Quinn Brady set up Engtrakul with an assist for the second and final goal of the game.

Sophomore Will Gabrielson and junior Leo Broteland did an outstanding job protecting the back line and preventing shots throughout the game. Junior forward Cruz Reyes also had a block off the goal line which solidified the second-half shutout for the Cougars.

"The team feels good about the three-game winning streak, but we also know we are going to have to keep working on capitalizing on goal scoring chances in order to prepare for a tough league schedule in October," said Head Coach Stephen Dimit.

As Dimit and the team prepare for their next opponent, Northridge High School, Dimit said, "Those big rivalry games coming up are the motivation for us. Northridge is a former league opponent, so we have a lot of history there as well."

Dimit added, "We are also feeling very good defensively. We have only given up one goal in open play through five games (the other goal was a penalty kick). If we can keep that defensive work up, we can be very good."

Niwot will hit the road playing at Northridge High School on Thursday, Sept. 18, and away again on Sept. 24 at Severance High School.

After the game on Wednesday, the Drone Team from the Innovation Center of St. Vrain Valley School District (ICSVVSD) put on an incredible drone show, adding to the soccer team's win and homecoming week festivities. The drone show was curated by a group of St. Vrain Valley students who attend classes at the Innovation Center using complex equipment and approximately 300 drones.

Over the summer, the team banded together to create a July 4th-themed drone show in Longmont, so they are no strangers to performing for a crowd. Students worked hard to place an exact grid of the drones and troubleshoot any problems before the show to ensure that it would run seamlessly.
