All Local, All The Time

63rd Street Waterline Replacement Project

The City of Boulder strives to provide customers with safe, high-quality drinking water. In order to continue to do this, older waterlines that are reaching the end of their useful life must be replaced.

As part of the 63rd Street Waterline Replacement Project, the City of Boulder will be replacing two aging waterlines along 63rd Street between CO 119 (Diagonal Highway) and Jay Road, a project that is funded by the city's utilities fund.

The project will replace two aging waterlines and infrastructure that support the Gunbarrel area, with newer, more easily maintained waterlines that are intended to improve water distribution resilience. One of the new waterlines will be twice as large as the existing waterline, which will help meet the increase in drinking water demand from the Gunbarrel community.

The initial project phase, which is expected to take approximately one year, will replace a 12-inch and a 30-inch waterline. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 7, and continue until the fall of 2025. Construction activity time will generally occur Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Although the city indicates it will work to minimize impacts to the fullest extent possible, there will be major impacts along 63rd Street, south of CO 119 to Twin Lakes Road.

Vehicle traffic should expect single and full lane closures and lane shifts along the stretch, as well as impacts along the route to bus stops. Pedestrians and bicyclists along 63rd Street should also expect detours from the railroad tracks just south of CO 119 to Twin Lakes Road.

A full road closure of 63rd Street, between Nautilus Drive and Jay Road, with detours, is anticipated for this winter.

Neighborhoods and businesses will be accessible during construction, however, people should anticipate detours to do so. Specific driveways may also be impacted, as well as local impacts to water service for short periods of time during construction. The project team will work directly with affected community members in advance of any local water service impacts.

Once the initial project phase is completed in the fall of 2025, the city will then continue with the waterline replacement on 63rd and 62nd Streets from Jay Road to Boulder Creek. This second project phase is currently anticipated for 2025-2026.

Travelers and residents of the area are encouraged to visit the city's Cone Zones map for travel impact updates and suggested detours.
