The Niwot High School cross country teams delivered an impressive performance at the Desert Twilight XC Festival on Friday, Sept 28, overcoming scorching 90-degree temperatures to capture both the girls and boys Sweepstakes titles. As the only school in the nation with both teams ranked in the top five nationally, the Cougars solidified their status as a powerhouse program with commanding victories on a hot night at the Toka Sticks Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.
In the Girls Sweepstakes race, Niwot's Addison Ritzenhein, ranked No. 2 in the country and the reigning Nike Cross Nationals individual champion, dominated the field with a blistering time of 16:41.30. Ritzenhein, a junior, finished with a nearly 40-second margin over the second place runner.

The No. 3 ranked Niwot boys team withstood a strong challenge from Rio Rancho High School in New Mexico and clinched the Boys Sweepstakes title with 69 points. A Rio Rancho runner narrowly outdueled Niwot's Rocco Culpepper, a junior, for the individual title, crossing the finish line just 2.1 seconds ahead of Culpepper's 14:22.30. A total of six runners broke the 15-minute mark on the 5,000-meter course, showcasing the event's high level of competition.
