All Local, All The Time
The first round of the Colorado High School Activities Association Boys Tennis Dual Team State Championships began on Oct. 2, with all 16 teams in both 4A and 5A classifications playing their first-round matches. Winning teams advanced to the quarterfinal round, Oct. 9-12.
Of the top 16 teams that advanced to the state tournament, Niwot, the eighth seed, played Vail Christian High School, the ninth seed. Each team had to win four of seven lines to advance to the quarterfinals, with Niwot falling 1-6 in a challenging first round.
The team’s performance was notably hampered by illness, with coaches having to move lines that were unable to compete. The unexpected illness of two players was a setback that left the Cougars at a significant disadvantage, fielding a reduced roster against their opponents.
With one player sick who did not play, and one player sick who did play, Assistant Coach Keith Wilcox observed, “It wasn’t a great performance.”
Oskar Hansen, at #3 singles line, was replaced by Jack Petersen who was originally in 3 doubles. Petersen was replaced in 3 doubles by Claude Leonard.
Despite the team’s overall loss in round one, and the obstacles faced leading to their early exit from the competition, one doubles pair managed to secure a victory, providing a silver lining to an otherwise difficult day.
Ollie Jones and Tyler Chivukula, competing in #4 doubles, stood out as the sole winners for Niwot. Their victory over Vail Christian showcased resilience and skill, as their teammates struggled to find similar success.
Niwot will move on to regionals which begin Wednesday Oct. 9. They hope to qualify all players for the state individual tournament the following week.
