Cougar football winless streak continues

The Niwot High School football team faced another challenging matchup on Thursday, Oct. 17, which resulted in a 44-0 loss to the Timnath High School Cubs. This latest defeat keeps the Cougars winless on the season, extending their losing streak to 0-7 as they struggled to find offensive momentum throughout the game.

The first quarter was a defensive battle. Niwot's quarterback, sophomore Jaydan Martinez, connected early with sophomore Kaleb Notterman, but the drive ultimately ended in a turnover on downs. Timnath struck first with a field goal, taking an early 3-0 lead.

The Cougars made some impressive defensive plays, including big tackles by senior Juan Mares and junior Eli Quesada, but were unable to capitalize on their efforts. The first quarter ended with a setback from Niwot when Martinez left the game with an injury and did not return. Junior Wyatt Volf, who began the season as the starting quarterback, stepped in to lead the Cougars for the rest of the game.

As the second quarter progressed, the Cubs added another field goal, extending their lead to 6-0. Niwot had a promising drive, highlighted by a big throw from Volf to Mares and a run by junior Caleb Roby, putting the Cougars in field goal range. However, the Cougars' first attempt to put themselves on the scoreboard was blocked by Timnath.

The Cubs then scored on a 54-yard run to make it 13-0. The Cougars were unable to find their footing, as the Cubs' next possession resulted in an 83-yard touchdown on a punt return.

Before halftime, the Cougars recovered a Cub fumble at their one-yard line, but were unable to capitalize, leaving the score at 20-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Niwot attempted to rally with a big run, but the Cubs responded with another field goal and a touchdown, pushing the score to 30-0. The Cougars continued to struggle with various delay-of-game penalties, further hindering their chance for a comeback.

Another Timnath touchdown made it 37-0, and shortly afterward, an intercepted pass led to yet another touchdown, making it 44-0, which ended the scoring.

The Cougars will look to break their winless streak as they head into their next game against the Greeley Central Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:00 p.m. The Wildcats currently hold a 3-4 record and are coming off two consecutive losses to Northridge and Mead. With four games now behind them without finding any points on the board, the Cougars are eager to turn things around and get on the scoreboard in the coming weeks.
