Split week for Niwot boys soccer as playoffs loom

The Niwot High School boys soccer team experienced both triumph and disappointment this week, securing a convincing 4-0 victory over Frederick High School before falling to Skyline High School in a surprising 4-3 upset.

In Tuesday's away match at Frederick, Niwot showcased its offensive prowess with a balanced scoring attack. Naveen Bopearachchigedon, Colin Mundt, Jay Scharfe, and Mohi Bauer each found the back of the net as the Cougars secured their second consecutive win, improving their record to 8-4-2. Seniors Malachi Gilmore and Lucas Willard split time in goal to post the shutout.

However, Friday's match against Skyline told a different story. Despite entering as heavy favorites, Niwot came up short in a 4-3 defeat after leading 2-1 at the half. Cruz Reyes, Mundt, and Gavin Engtrakul scored for the Cougars, but it wasn't enough to prevent the upset as Skyline scored three times in the second period. Willard played the entire game in goal, making three saves. The loss dropped Niwot's overall record to 8-5-2.

For Skyline, the victory was particularly sweet as it snapped a four-game losing streak, improving their record to 4-10-1 on the season.

Although the season has displayed a series of ups and downs for the Cougars, the team has proven they can compete with anyone when they are playing at their best.

The Cougars finished in fifth place in the Granite Peaks League, with a conference record of 2-3-2. Niwot earned a 12th-seed in Class 4A, with a first round home game on Oct. 31 at 6:30 p.m. against 21st seed Wheat Ridge.
