All Local, All The Time
The Niwot High School boys basketball team is entering the 2024-25 season with high hopes and a commitment to building a strong foundation in their first year competing in the newly formed Granite Peaks League at the 5A level. After finishing last season with a 7-16 overall record, the Cougars have focused on growth both on and off the court during an intensive offseason.
Head Coach Walker Bounds, now entering his second season as a coach after graduating from NHS in 2016, has been working hard with the team during the offseason. Since April, he has emphasized practices, workouts, and team camps to prepare for the challenges ahead. Bounds sees the season as another step in transforming the program's culture.
"Our goal remains the same from last year - continue to change the culture here," Bounds said. "We are process-oriented. We understand that if we strive for greatness on and off the floor, the results take care of themselves."
Returning players will play a critical role in the Cougars' efforts this season. Senior point guard Sebastian Stenz, a returning team captain, leads the team with a strong defensive presence, playmaking ability, and a knack for driving to the basket. "Sebastian leads by example with his supreme work ethic and a positive attitude," Bounds said. As a junior, Stenz totaled 108 points, 54 assists, and 41 rebounds.
Fellow seniors Luke Demmel and Rohit Das bring additional depth and experience. Demmel, a forward, is known for his rim protection and perimeter shooting, contributing 47 rebounds and 46 points last season. Das, a guard, combines sharpshooting with aggressive drives to the hoop, scoring 149 points with 53 rebounds in his junior campaign.
Senior Archer Buckbee adds further scoring ability and versatility, having recorded 73 points, 26 rebounds, and 21 assists last season. Junior Elliot Wisecup brings energy on both ends of the court, with 69 points, 36 rebounds, 15 assists, and 14 steals to his name. Taylor Rodanski, a senior, showcased his all-around skill set last year, posting 68 points, 53 rebounds, 28 assists, and 23 steals.
In the transition to the Granite Peaks League, the Cougars face a tough slate of opponents. "The league features some very talented players and prestigious coaches," Bounds said, acknowledging the depth of competition Niwot will encounter. Still, he remains confident in the Cougars' preparation and ability to rise to the challenge.
One game that stands out on the schedule is the February 7 matchup against Silver Creek High School, which will also serve as Senior Night. Bounds anticipates a strong showing as the team celebrates its seniors in front of a supportive home crowd.
The Cougars will debut their hard work in their home opener against Pomona High School on Friday, Dec. 17, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Their first league game is set for Jan. 7, also at home, against Horizon High School. Fans can expect a competitive season as Niwot seeks to showcase their growth and determination in a challenging new environment.
