The one-and-a-half mile loop of trail that surrounds the Legend Ridge subdivision was completely resurfaced with an estimated 1,200 tons of recycled asphalt. This dark, dense surface is known to be environmentally wise because it doesn't require a supply of new materials. It is also highly durable, and less likely to become rutted from heavy runoff of water, thereby leading to a reduced need for maintenance. The cost of the project was $184,000, paid by Boulder County. The Legend Ridge HOA owns the land and made the decision regarding the materials to be used for the project. According to Andy Tyler, Boulder County Trails Supervisor, "There was language in the development agreement that the developer would construct the trail and then dedicate it to the county, if the county accepted the trail. Our legal team could not find any information about the county officially accepting the trail, but since we have been maintaining it for 20 years or so, it would indicate that the county has accepted it."
