All Local, All The Time
The Niwot Cougars football team wrapped up its 2024 season with recognition for several standout players and optimism for the future. Despite a winless season, individual efforts shined through.
Juniors Wyatt Volf and Eli Quesada led the way with selections to the North 3A All-Conference team. Volf earned his spot as a defensive back thanks to his ability to make plays where it mattered most. Playing at linebacker, Quesada was a steady force for the Cougars' defense, making key tackles throughout the season.
Additionally, four players received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. Senior Haden Shaw was recognized for his contributions as a defender and running back, stepping up to make a significant impact despite missing time earlier in the season due to injury. Junior Kaiden Cochran earned his place for his play on the offensive line, where his performance was vital throughout the season.
Junior Caleb Roby's relentless effort stood out, especially in the run game, where he consistently fought for yardage. Fellow junior Ethan Taing rounded out the Honorable Mention list, providing consistent blocking on the offensive line.
The Cougars also celebrated their internal team awards. Volf's leadership and performance on both offense and defense earned him the title of Most Valuable Player. His versatility as quarterback and defensive back made him a cornerstone of the team, and his recognition is a testament to his dedication.
Most Valuable Offensive Player honors went to senior Moises Gonzalez Avina, who showcased his skills at tight end, often stepping up in crucial moments to help the Cougars gain momentum. On defense, Quesada's relentless effort earned him the Most Valuable Defensive Player recognition, highlighting his importance to the team's overall effort.
While the team faces the departure of four starters, they are already laying the groundwork for a stronger season in 2025. According to Head Coach Nikolas Blume, the team is focused on off-season preparation to achieve a winning record next fall. "The boys are already hard at work," Blume said, emphasizing his optimism for the program's future.
Though the Cougars ended the season with a 0-9 record, the postseason honors highlight the talent and potential within the program. With dedicated players, Niwot looks ahead to building a competitive team in the coming year. The foundation laid by this team's seniors will undoubtedly serve as a stepping stone for future success.
