All Local, All The Time
Luca Cherian, a sixth grade student attending Dawson School in Lafayette, won first place in the grade 6-9 category at the Longmont Chorale's Youth Vocal Competition held on Oct. 26 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Longmont.
The competition is open to local students in grades 6-12 and is separated into two categories: grades 6-9 and grades 10-12. Cherian won first place in the grade 6-9 category. The second and third-place winners in this division were Etta McCurdy from Westlake Middle School in Broomfield and Lila Stanis from Mead Middle School.
In addition to the $300 prize, Cherian won the opportunity to perform with the Longmont Chorale
at the Dec. 8 holiday concert, "On a Snowy Evening." He delighted more than 565 audience members with his beautiful rendition of "Danny Boy," a traditional folk song.
The competition provides a performance opportunity for students as well as valuable feedback from three local music professionals who judge each student's performance.
Deb Heller, Youth Vocal Competition Coordinator for the Longmont Chorale, said, "The Longmont Chorale is strongly committed to nurturing young singers by encouraging high-school age singers to become members of the Chorale and by sponsoring this Youth Vocal Competition each fall. For young singers from all along the Front Range, this is a rare opportunity to compete for cash prizes and the opportunity to sing with the Longmont Chorale.
