All Local, All The Time

New bike shop to open in Cottonwood Square

After over 35 years of dedication to the biking industry, a seasoned expert and longtime community figure is pedaling into a new chapter. Having spent years honing his craft at Niwot Wheel Works on Second Avenue, Fernando Tapia is opening a new bike shop in Cottonwood Square, bringing his expertise and passion for cycling to a new location. The opening is planned for March 1.

Cornelia Sawle, new owner of the property at 101 Second Avenue in Niwot where the Niwot Wheel Works has been located, said that the space formerly occupied by the bike shop will be converted into a kitchen, but that she plans to continue to have a bike shop in the back of the property.

With many years of experience, Tapia has become a trusted name in the local cycling community. From fine-tuning bikes to helping customers find the perfect ride, he has built a reputation as someone who genuinely understands the needs of cyclists, whether they're casual riders or seasoned racers.

His journey began with a deep-rooted love for biking and a desire to share it with others. At Niwot Wheel Works, he developed lasting relationships with customers and became a go-to expert for all things bike-related, including cycling gear, repairs, and maintenance tips. After years of service, he said he wanted to "start something new and seek more independence," with a shop that reflects his vision for what a modern, community-focused bike shop should be.

Located in the southeast corner of Cottonwood Square in the space formerly occupied by Niwot Gig, the new bike shop will offer more than just top-notch repairs and sales. It is a space Tapia is designing to foster a sense of community among cyclists.

The shop will also carry a carefully curated selection of bikes and accessories, catering to riders of all levels with an emphasis on sustainability and supporting the cycling lifestyle.

As the shop gains traction in its new location, Tapia hopes to continue serving the Niwot community with the same dedication that has defined his career. He said he "enjoys working and connecting with high school students" at his shop.

For those who have worked with him in the past, this new chapter is a testament to his commitment to keeping the wheels of the local cycling scene turning. And for new customers, it's an opportunity to experience firsthand the expertise and passion of a true biking expert.
