All Local, All The Time
In just a few short weeks, including the holiday season rush, Niwot's Sesquicentennial Committee is quickly making plans to celebrate the platting of Niwot 150 years ago.
Under the leadership of Laura Skaggs, the committee is working to "put a ribbon on every event in Niwot," said Skaggs.
To that end, Angie Miltersen of Few of a Kind Vintage and Mercantile quickly designed a banner that can be used by every organization in Niwot to promote its events throughout the year. The banner has already appeared in print in the Left Hand Valley Courier in advertisements for upcoming events.
Let's Wine About Winter, a Feb. 8 event sponsored by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association (NCAA), has added the sesquicentennial banner to the mugs handed out to participants, making them a collector's item.
Niwot artist Lisa Rivard has been enlisted to create a painting that can be turned into a wooden Liberty Puzzle featuring a Niwot scene. Flyers to guide participants in walking tours of Niwot are being updated, and will be part of many Niwot events.
Phil Yates, a newly elected member of the NCAA's board of directors, has made arrangements for a program at Niwot Hall featuring a presentation by Oklahoma resident Fred Mosqueda, an elder of the Southern Arapaho tribe, with a focus on continuing to build relationships for the next 150 years with Native American tribes who occupied the Niwot area before white settlers arrived. Mosqueda spoke at a Niwot Historical Society Then & Now presentation in 2024 to a standing room only crowd. The event is planned for the evening of Monday, March 17.
Yates is also coordinating a Native American art show at Niwot Hall, scheduled for Sunday, March 16, in conjunction with the sesquicentennial.
Kathy Koehler of the Niwot Historical Society is working on putting a book together with historical images of Niwot, as well as a description of more recent history of the town. Koehler said she hopes to have it ready by March 30, which is the actual anniversary of the recording of the town plat with Boulder County.
Niwot Hall will be the site of a 150-year birthday party on March 30, from 12 noon to 3 p.m., complete with live music, cake and other refreshments. Historic images of Niwot will be included in a video, looped for easy viewing by those attending. Organizers are also planning to see if Niwot residents can pronounce "sesquicentennial," among other activities.
Residents will also be encouraged to bring letters and other items to be buried in a time capsule to be opened in 25 years.
Later in the year, the Niwot Community Association is considering a one-day event reminiscent of Niwot Nostalgia Days, a celebration held in Niwot in the past.
Miltersen also suggested creating a Niwot Christmas ornament memorializing the first 150 years of the Niwot community.
The committee's next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. at Porchfront Homes. The committee, which also includes Jeff Knight, Chris Crandell, Kristin Alger, Mary Coonce, Biff Warren and Deb Fowler, welcomes suggestions and input from the community.
