All Local, All The Time
Boulder County's Third Annual Seed Swap will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Niwot United Methodist Church.
The swap, founded originally by Elise Edson, Maureen Harvey, and Diana Neff, is a networking event for new and experienced gardeners to share information about the plants they are growing and to swap seeds with other gardeners. Gardening was a hobby that many people took up during the pandemic, and the founders started the event three years ago in order to help to connect the growing community.
The event is completely free, and will be organized in a "potluck style" swap. Attendees are encouraged to bring flower seeds, vegetable seeds, bulbs, and starters, along with any information or tips they have for planting and caring for them. Attendees are encouraged to bring a container or envelope to take home the seeds they recieve. Any gardeners who are just starting out and do not yet have any seeds to share are still welcome to meet the community and pick up some seeds to get started.
Along with the swap, gardening education and information will be available. Master Gardeners from Colorado State University will give a presentation and be available to answer questions. Master Gardeners are volunteer educators who share their knowledge and expertise with the public to promote sustainable landscape management.
Master Gardeners undergo a rigorous training program, offered through CSU, covering various aspects of horticulture, including soil science, plant identification and care, pest and disease management, and sustainable gardening practices. The particularly valuable thing about learning from the Master Gardeners is their expertise on the diverse local plant life in Colorado, and the challenges that a gardener encounters growing here.
The Seed Swap offers an opportunity for gardeners of all levels to connect, learn, and share. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, come join the community and discover the joys of gardening.
