All Local, All The Time
In the spring of 2008, a group of passionate parent leaders gathered with St. Vrain Valley School District administrators to address critical school funding challenges. From this pivotal moment, a transformative idea emerged—creating a program that would deeply engage community members in understanding the intricate workings of public education.
This vision became https://www.svvsd.org/about/district-committees/leadership-st-vrain/" target="_blank">Leadership St. Vrain, a groundbreaking initiative that has since become a cornerstone of community involvement in the St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD).
The Leadership St. Vrain program is not just an informational series, but a comprehensive journey that transforms passive community members into active, informed advocates for public education.
Each year, the program carefully selects a diverse cohort of participants through a competitive application process. These individuals represent a cross-section of the community, spanning all schools within SVVSD.
Over nine monthly sessions, participants explore the multifaceted landscape of educational leadership, focusing on critical areas such as district budgeting and financial strategies, technological innovations, governance, legislation, and student services.
Tim Watts, a parent participant who joined the program during the 2023-2024 cohort, exemplifies the program's transformative power. Watts discovered Leadership St. Vrain through a school communication channel and decided to engage more deeply with his children's educational ecosystem.
“It’s a great learning opportunity,” said Watts. “It’s an opportunity to hear the district tell you their goals and visions, and parents can ask questions.”
Watts said that through his participation in Leadership St. Vrain, he has gained a much better understanding of the size and scale of the school district. He said the program has helped him understand the challenges that come with the various needs and demands that a big community places on a school district.
Watts added that he has a “good sense of trust that the district is moving in the right direction and that it is managed very well.”
The program's curriculum is meticulously designed to provide comprehensive information and insight to the participants who meet monthly with district and community leaders. The meetings include in-depth discussions that cover everything from the intricacies of school financing to the complexities of special education and technology integration. Superintendent Don Haddad and other key district leaders regularly participate, offering direct insights into the district's strategic planning and operational challenges.
The program's impact extends far beyond mere information sharing. It cultivates a sense of trust and understanding between the community and educational leadership. Participants such as Watts emerge with a deeper appreciation for the strategic thinking and careful planning that goes into modern educational administration. They become ambassadors for the district, helping to bridge communication gaps and foster a more engaged, informed community.
As Leadership St. Vrain grows, it continues to embody the original vision of those parent leaders who first came together in 2008. It remains a testament to the power of community engagement, transforming individuals from passive observers to active participants in one of Colorado's most dynamic and forward-thinking school districts.
In January, the St. Vrain Valley School District also celebrated an unprecedented milestone of achieving its highest graduation rate in the history of the district at 94.3%. Its Hispanic student graduation rate is at 90%, the highest in the area. The SVVSD dropout rate is .04%, the lowest in the Denver Metro Area. With these milestones, SVVSD is ranked first among Colorado’s 10 largest school districts and is positioned as a leader in the Denver Metro Area.
