All Local, All The Time

Watershed Bowl-a-Thon Preps for Empty Bowls Event

Watershed School's Bowl-a-Thon was held on Thursday, Jan. 23, the Watershed School in Gunbarrel. The event hosted a collection of local potters and students who used pottery wheels to throw over 60 bowls for their upcoming Second Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser.

Empty Bowls events were initiated by artists in 1990 to raise money for food-related charities in local communities and are still occurring around the globe. They invite people to purchase a ticket to attend the event where they choose a handmade bowl and receive a bowl of soup to symbolize the empty bowls of individuals facing food insecurity.

The upcoming Empty Bowls Benefit Event to Fight Hunger will be hosted at the Watershed School (East Building), 5405 Spine Rd, Boulder, Thursday, Feb. 20 at 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. Attendees can purchase a $25 ticket to receive a handcrafted ceramic bowl and a meal of soup and bread. Other sponsors of the event include Boulder Potters' Guild, Lucky's Market and Lucky's Bakehouse Cafe, and Dish Gourmet Catering + Deli.

Watershed arts educator Jeff Osgood said "All proceeds from the event benefit Harvest of Hope Food Pantry. Last year we raised a little under $5,000 and this year we hope to raise over that and to just keep putting on this event year after year."

Osgood continued, "These events are great opportunities for our students to get involved in the community. Each course at our school is challenged to have outreach programs and this for the ceramics classes."

"The upcoming Empty Bowls event is a great opportunity to come out and walk away with some local art while also supporting folks in Boulder county who are challenged with food insecurity," said Osgood. "You can also get involved by going directly to Harvest Hope to volunteer. Try to support locally as much as you can and have an impact if you are able to do some good."
