Niwot High School's unified basketball team dominated in its second home game against the Mead High School Mavericks on Friday, Jan. 24. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Cougars sealed a 56-44 victory, making them 2-0 on the season.
The game started in a back-and-forth fashion before Niwot found a rhythm with multiple players finding the basket. Right before the halftime buzzer, senior Jake Hostelley scored, leaving the Cougars with the lead, 22-20.
Coming out of the break, Niwot extended the lead. After Mead scored to tie the game, a three-pointer by freshman Isaiah Richart pushed the Cougars back into the lead, followed by a successful shot from junior Jack Frailey, making it 29-24. Niwot's offense continued to build momentum as Richart nailed another three-pointer, bringing the score to 38-26.
The Cougars were led by a strong team effort, with several players contributing key points. Freshman Sawyer Gall was especially dominant, adding multiple baskets throughout the game, including back-to-back scores that increased Niwot's lead to 40-26. Sophomore Te Esquibel-Davis also made an impact in the game.
Sophomore Taylor Teigen scored crucial points that kept the team's momentum going, while sophomore Dallin Easton added a basket to increase the lead to 48-36. The Cougars' collective effort on both offense and defense kept the Mavericks at bay.
The energy in the gym was electric, with cheerleaders and handmade signs scattered through the student section adding to the atmosphere. The gymnasium was packed with enthusiastic supporters, and Mead's basketball teams, waiting to take the floor later that day, were also in attendance, filling the bleachers with cheers and excitement.
As the game neared its end, the Cougars maintained their dominance. With Gall making a key shot to seal the win, Niwot's final score stood 56-44, a solid finish to a thrilling game.
The Cougars' next game is away on Tuesday, Jan. 28 against Frederick High School at 3 p.m.
