All Local, All The Time

63 NHS students perform with District Honor Choir

The St. Vrain Valley School District Honor Choir performance took place on Monday, Jan. 27, at Erie High School. The students practiced the full day before performing in the concert at 7 p.m. that night.

"This is a special event every year where the top students from each of our district high schools are selected to come together to perform." Laura Walters, the Niwot High School Choir Director, said about the preparation for the performance. "The students auditioned in November. This year 63 students made it from Niwot."

All the students who made it into the Honor Choir this year received rehearsal tracks to learn and practice the songs on their own. The two choirs that performed in the district event were Treble Choir and Mixed Choir. There was only one solo opportunity for the choir singers this year, which was in Mixed Choir. Ali Kraut and Kennah Brackett both got to sing the solo part in the song, "All My Trials."

The songs this year for Treble Choir were "Ave Regina Caelorum" by Isabella Leonarda, arranged by Meredith Bowen, "She Lingers On" by Zanaida Robles, "Mizmor Shir Chanukat HaBayit" by Coreen Duffy, and "Take this Gift" by Tracy Wong.

For Mixed Choir, the songs performed were "All My Trials" (a Bahamian spiritual) arranged by Norman Luboff, "O Love" by Elaine Hagenberg, "Kuimba Nafsi Yangu" by Jacob Narverud, and "Zion's Walls" by Aaron Copeland, arranged by Glenn Koponen.

The choirs are also preparing for another concert on March 11 and a performance at Disney World from March 13 to March 17.

"I thought the performance was lovely," Walters said. "Everyone sang well and each choir did a fantastic job. Everyone works together, rehearses together and performs together. All students from all of the schools that participated worked together to make a beautiful concert that was enjoyed by all that attended."
