Magnolia Valentine leads NHS girls tennis team into new season

As the Niwot High School girls varsity tennis team prepares for a new season, Team Captain Magnolia Valentine is focused on leading with an emphasis on community, support, and growth. With tennis in her life since she was five, Valentine, a senior, brings years of experience and a passion for the game to her role. But as captain, her primary focus is on fostering a strong, supportive team dynamic.

"One of the most important aspects of leadership for this team is building a strong community, which relies heavily on communication," Valentine explained. "When you create a positive environment, there's a lot of support, and that's key for success."

The Cougars are entering a new Granite Peaks League conference this season, facing tougher competition and higher-level teams than in the past. While this will present challenges, Valentine and Head Coach Aimee Hites are confident that the team can rise to the occasion with the right attitude.

"We're in a new conference, which means we're up against some strong teams, but I think we can succeed," Magnolia said. "It's all about the mindset we bring to the matches. If we stay focused and keep a positive attitude, we can really perform well."

The team's goals for the season are clear. "Our main goal is always to send players to state, but what matters most is that we maintain a productive and supportive environment," said Valentine. "It's about creating a place where everyone feels comfortable and motivated to improve."

"We've always had great support from each other, and using that support will be a big factor in our success this season," says Magnolia. "Even though tennis is an individual sport, the team atmosphere is really what makes us strong. When everyone is backing each other up, we all perform better."

For the younger players, the advice from the team captain is simple - progress takes time, and support is always available. Returning varsity athletes on the team include Saha Kolli, Magnolia Valentine, Masha Oshmyan, Anne Haley, Samantha Zacky, Jordan Rutkowski, Hannah Nelson, and Emory Rich. Tryouts will conclude on Wednesday, March 5, and the full varsity and junior-varsity teams will be ready for the season. Whether new to the sport or developing their skills, Valentine believes the help of teammates and coaches is crucial.

The Cougar's first varsity match will be at home against Holy Family High School on March 6 at 3:30 p.m.
