Harold Ian Hayes
June 16, 1931 – March 4, 2025
Harold Ian Hayes, known to those close to him as Ian, passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 4, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. His wife Jacquelyn and his daughters, Alex and Sue, were by his side as he took his final rest.
Born in a London suburb, Ian grew up in the shadow of World War II, surviving the bombings that shaped both his resilience and his sharp perspective on the world. He carried that resilience into a lifelong career as an engineer, designing foundational electronic transit systems that continue to move people across America and Europe today.
Beyond his technical brilliance, Ian was a poet at heart-a man who found elegance in both words and mechanics. He had a sharp wit, laced with the dry, undeniable humor of his British roots, and a mind that was always seeking creative solutions, whether in his work or in life. He believed there was always a way to make things fit, even when they weren't designed to.
He leaves behind a legacy of intellect, creativity, and humor, cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Hayes' home in Longmont, CO.
In lieu of fresh-cut flowers or gifts, the family invites contributions toward a memorial garden they will be creating in Ian's honor. Donations can be made in person at the memorial or arranged through "The Flower Bin" in Longmont, CO, under Jacquelyn Hayes' name.
